1. Four Systems Proved in Order
Idea in one line: the main engine never starts alone — its air, oil, water and fuel support systems are started and proved first.
A large two-stroke can be driven from the bridge, the engine control room, or the emergency stand, so preparation covers whichever station takes control. Notice is normally two hours: ancillaries are checked and the required pumps started well in advance.

2. Bar It, Blow It — Inside 30 Minutes
Idea in one line: slow barring spreads oil through the bearings, then a blast of starting air throws trapped liquid out before it can wreck the engine.
Clearance first: the turning gear drags the propeller — take clearance from the deck watch, confirm crankcase, piston undersides and shaft alley empty of people and tools, indicator cocks open.
Bar slowly: LO pump running spreads the hydrodynamic film through the mains while turning distributes it (pressure stays low while exhaust valves stand open).
Disengage, then blow through on air to blast accumulated fuel and oil out of the cylinders — trapped liquid does not compress, and hydraulics break engines.
All inside 30 minutes of the start order; report ready to the chief per standing orders.
3. Voyage-Ready Checklist
Idea in one line: standby is a contract — standing orders, handover, electrics, air, control and comms all signed off before the telegraph moves.
Orders and handover: standing and daily orders plus watchkeeper handover records checked — linked directly to personnel safety and hazard elimination.
Power: start the standby auxiliary engine and parallel it — two generators share load during manoeuvring.
Fuel and water: FO tanks feeding main and auxiliaries at procedure temperatures; jacket header level with expansion ullage (hot water grows and overflows a brimmed tank); sump, turbo and lubricator levels confirmed.
Steam and air: boiler on auto with circulating pumps running; bottles pressed and blown with compressors in auto; every ME pump set running; gear confirmed disengaged.
Control and comms: full engine-room round for abnormalities; control in auto with oil-mist detector live; telegraph tried from the room; two-way bridge communications established; panel alarm-free; main air valve open; blow-through with water-ingress watch; trial kicks ahead and astern.
