1. Thirteen Checks of a Watching Engineer
Idea in one line: one sense plus one gauge at a time, thirteen times a watch — small leaks and small drifts caught before either grows teeth.
Eyes on exhaust: funnel colour grades combustion; profuse sparks aloft mean unit trouble or uptake fire.
Leaks: chase every small leak before it grows — fuel, oil, water and air alike.
Temperatures balanced:
- Exhaust readings even across units prove equal load.
- Jacket outlets vented free of air locks via test cocks.
- Piston-cooling outlet temperature and flow confirmed.
Turbocharger watched: lubrication sound with gas temperatures logged each side of turbine and blower.
Lubricators seen working: mechanical feeds stroking, sight glasses dripping.
Gauges trended, not glanced: every pressure and temperature logged against its normal band.
Ears open: running-gear abnormality announces itself in sound before instruments.
Tanks and filters: service tanks drained of water and sludge before use (sludged day tanks have stopped engines); filters changed on schedule — one clogged filter stops an engine.
Shallow water: high sea suction keeps sand out of the cooling system.
2. Six Human Errors That Wreck Engines

3. Four Hazards, First Signs
Idea in one line: every big engine accident is fuel meeting air meeting heat — the four hazards are just the four places the meeting happens.
Air-line explosion
Poorly kept compressors and driers carry oil and moisture into the manifold, coating it. A leaking start valve admits hot combustion gas — the third ingredient. Bursting discs stand guard at every unit's valve; drains, separators and non-return valves hold the line back to the receivers.
Crankcase explosion
Starved bearings make hot spots, oil vaporises, condenses to fine white mist, and detonates on the next pass. Mist detectors alarm and slow the engine; relief doors with flame traps and deflectors vent the wave.
Scavenge fire
Under-piston sludge of drain-down cylinder oil, stuffing-box carry-up and unburnt residues, lit by blow-past, hot pistons or exhaust blow-back. First sign: scavenge temperature climbs and revs sag; then the unit's exhaust and scavenge temperatures rise together, drains spark, the turbocharger hunts, smoke thickens, cooling water warms.
Surge
Blocked gas path backs pressure across blower blades into howling stall — choked coolers, ports, manifolds, economisers, or exhaust-side shifts from bad injectors, timing, valves or scavenge fire; sudden load swings in heavy weather do it too. Blower washed daily at full revs, turbine at dead slow with the turbocharger near 1500–2000.
