1. Who Stands the Watch

Idea in one line: one undistracted officer owns the machinery spaces, and the bar for who that officer can be is set in kilowatts.

The chief, with the master, sets watch arrangements that keep a safe engineering watch in port — ratings included where needed. Composition follows propulsion power (total maximum continuous rated output of all main propulsion machinery on the certificate of registry): at 3,000 kW and above an officer always heads the engineering watch; below that the master, consulting the chief, may sail without one. And the officer on watch does nothing that interferes with supervising the machinery — no side tasks, no divided attention.

Two bars guard every handover: the outgoing officer never hands over to a reliever who is obviously unfit — the chief is notified instead, and the reliever confirms the whole incoming team is fit too. And an operation in progress is finished by the outgoing officer — the watch does not change hands mid-job unless the chief orders otherwise.

2. The Handover Brief — Ten Items, Three Readiness Checks

Idea in one line: the outgoing watch downloads its entire brain — orders, people, levels, hazards, phones — before the incoming watch touches a thing.

The outgoing officer briefs ten items before the watch changes hands:

Standing and special orders of the day — machinery, maintenance and repair orders included.

All work in progress on machinery and systems, with people involved and potential hazards.

Bilge, ballast, slop, sewage and reserve levels — with use and disposal needs.

Sanitary-system disposal constraints.

Fire equipment and detection state — portable, fixed and detection systems.

Repair teams and strangers aboard — locations, functions, crew required.

Port rules on effluents, fire-fighting and readiness — especially in bad weather.

Then the reliever proves readiness personally: know every power, heat and lighting source and its distribution — know fuel, lube and water states and availability — and be ready to bring ship and machinery to standby or emergency at short notice.

3. On Watch — Rounds, Bilges, Records

Idea in one line: the watch is a loop — look, listen, smell, feel, fix, log — and the loop never stops until handover.

On watch the officer gives particular attention to four things: all orders and hazardous-condition procedures in every space in charge; instrumentation, controls and every power system in operation; local pollution-prevention technique; and the state of the bilges.

In return the watch delivers five duties: raise the alarm and fight damage the moment an emergency demands it; serve the deck officer's cargo, ballast and stability equipment needs; walk frequent rounds that catch failure early with immediate remedy; take precautions across electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical systems; and record every significant operation, adjustment and repair in writing.

Round-smart habits

Never touch a hot steam pipe to find a leak — tie a loose rag to a stick and watch it flutter at the joint. Carry a lamp for awkward uptake gauges. Keep ladders and plates clean and fastened, manifolds lagged in metal with no exhaust leaks, gauges and thermometers calibrated, and fuel and lube leaks contained the moment they appear.

4. Hazardous Cargo & the Cargo Watch

Idea in one line: dangerous cargo upgrades the watch from routine to ready-aboard — scaled to exactly how dangerous, how much and how packed.

Hazardous in bulk — stay aboard

Explosive, flammable, toxic or polluting bulk cargo keeps duly qualified officers — and ratings where appropriate — readily available aboard even at a safe berth or anchorage. The chief's standing orders carry every precaution.

Hazardous packed — scale it

Other packagings scale the watch to the cargo's nature, quantity, packing and stowage, plus conditions afloat and ashore — under the master's full account and the chief's standing orders.

Cargo handling in port is a planned operation, not a background chore: the officers responsible — deck and engine — plan and conduct loading and discharge safely by controlling the specific risks, including when non-ship personnel are involved. Any repair touching the fire-detection system, such as hot work in the area, is written into the work permit.

5. Work Organisation & the Safety Net

Plan every job like an overhaul:

Pre-plan and discuss before starting — drawings and manuals read first, every person confirming understanding. Pump strip-downs punish the unbriefed.

Rehearse isolations — pipelines and electrics positively made safe — and walk through the what-ifs.

Count tools into a bucket before and after — critically inside crankcases, cylinders, ducting and scavenge spaces where a forgotten spanner becomes engine damage.

Keep the site clean before, during and after — cleanliness prevents the second casualty.

Lock the ship, not the escape

With spaces unmanned, lock external entrances except designated ones — but every door out of the engine room is an emergency exit, and every escape route must stay marked, known and unobstructed. Monthly safety inspections hold the whole net together.
